Meet Edward The Woodworker

Edward Develops Woodworking Skills With National Disability Insurance Scheme Support

Edward Williams is turning his love of woodwork into beautiful products made for his family, thanks to the assistance of a support worker funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The 26-year-old from Logan Village has made wooden candle holders, a boot box, and a toy box for his niece and nephew, and continues to improve his skills thanks to his support worker, Alan.
Edward, who has Down syndrome, also accesses a support worker to get out into the community.
Edward’s mum, Susan, said he is working towards an independent life with support workers he knows and trusts.

“With NDIS support, Edward now has plenty of opportunities to mix socially, and he is becoming a lot more comfortable away from us,” Susan said.
“He loves getting outdoors on both his support workers’ farms. Edward loves animals and quad bikes, as well as trips to the beach, swimming and boating.
“Spending time outdoors together with regular exercise physiology and physiotherapy also helps Edward with his fitness levels.
“These services are essential to help Edward with some physical issues.”

Edward received assistance to apply for and implement his NDIS plan from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Brisbane region.
Susan said she appreciates the support the NDIS provides for Edward.
“I think it is important for the NDIS to know there are a lot of people out there, like me, who thoroughly appreciate everything NDIS does for us.”
